Revival, Reformation & Mission

There is nothing that excites me more than mission and evangelism. I've recently been travelling around the British Isles and at every location, whether with ministers, elders or church members they are starting to recognize that the main trust of my conversation is going to be, "what is happening at grass-roots level?" While I am overseeing the Adventist church across the British Isles, I fully recognize that it is at local church level where the real impact is made. That is why I challenge every local congregation to "take seriously its reason for being". The aim of every board and business meeting should be "how do we reach the lost?"

Do you have ideas and suggestions? Have you tried anything that seems to be working. I'd be delighted to hear from you.

I am from Yerevan Armenia, for what writing now is very important for future, and donation of 200thousent pounds from city bank to your mission, please contact to me,tosend to you more details keep on love to Jesus and me to love him very much.

I continue my previous comment. It appears that the BUC stretches no further than Luton and perhaps Milton Keynes , but no further north or West. Since you are the General in this BUC army, can u at least guide your Lieutenant in the PM department who leads and organises these programme. It is unacceptable to bring some 10 - 12 speakers into the BUC territory year after year and spread them throughout the churches in the South England Conference and not even send one of them to the North England.

Dear MY President,
I notice the Core of Evangelism is being advertised in the heart of London and a few counties on the outskirts (Bracknell, & Reading). I happen to check the PM website for BUC and discovered to my utter dismay that you are hosting some 10 speakers all in the South England region. I am very disheartened by this in that the BUC stretches from Scotland to Wales, yet every year, this important programme is held in the South. it is simply not fair to us in the other missions.

You've got an email!

Perhaps not an email, but a message here. Thank you for your interesting and simple sermon today at newbold church. Indeed we some times expect to be better than others, but when serving God we should always remember the example of Jesus in our every day life. He did have all to take the leadership of the world of His time, but he did not....rather, He left His humble life example to all of us.

Keep up with your interesting sermons!

Jim Cunningham recently made an interesting an passionate presentation at the ASI-UK convention, 'Reaching secularised Britain.' It is worth a read. http://adventistnews.org.uk/Jim_Cunningham_Evangelising_Secular_Britain.pdf

It is sad that this is the 1st time that Dan has experienced anyone wanting to know how to make the church more 'Brit-friendly' so I think it's brilliant that Pastor Sweeney is now asking the question. I still believe that many of things that would make it more 'brit-friendly' would make it more friendly for lots of other people as well, like our young people. eg. I love that there is no dress code at my church. you can wear a suit or jeans and not feel you're being judged.

One of the reasons was because of the commitment to a good worship experience. There was no spiritualising mediocrity there. I attended the SEC Expo held recently, and one of the workshops picked up on this problem. That in many SDA churches, not enough effort goes into planning the service and making sure that its creative, enjoyable and meaningful. So another suggestion, is to make mediocrity unacceptable.

I wholeheartedly agree with the Dacosta's concern for more prayer and less discussion at the Prayer meeting. heartfelt prayer, where there can be weeping, and pleading to God. regarding Pentecostal, that's an interesting one. I could never understand why so many of our youth go to church on Sabbath, then Hill song Pentecostal church on the Sunday, until I experienced it for myself. I had an amazing worship experience.

So my suggestion is this, Remove the requirement for elders to preach. It's not biblical, and it creates a dry environment when people who have not got the gift of preaching are expected to preach. Many times just people endure it, by reading their personal devotions, their Bibles, or just sitting outside. Many just don't come. That can't be good for the health of the church.

Interestingly I am black british, I also hate having preachers who 'rant' and rave, accuse and tell you off in the sermon. But speaking with passion, yes please. Regarding the length of the sermon, if someone like Pastor Sweeney and others blessed with the gift of preaching get in the pulpit for an hour, that's no problem. Conversely when we have people who can't preach taking the divine hour, 15 mins is way too long!

If we could add the passion, spirit and power which the Pentecostals have with our 'truth' we would turn the world upside down. So Mr President, our churches/members must make themselves available for serious prayer meetings. time of prayer, weeping, crying, sacrificing for souls and less discussion at prayer meeting and more prayer. And our ministers must live up to their call by seeking God more in earnest agonising prayer. In essence, our problem is a spiritual one. That's it.

Tim I agree with you. What are we not doing right as SDA in Britain? Its not about culture. Frances is right. As a former Pentecostal, when I came into the Adventist church I was appalled at the lack of commitment and the widescale liberalism. In the Pentecostal church when the congregation is asked to attend another church EVERYONE moves together and support. IN SDA, it is , who wants to go. Wehave the truth, but lack Holy Spirit Power . Ellen says that this is why the Gospel is powerless.

Dan Please note that services at the pentecostal/evangelical churches go beyond an hour and the preaching is long, yet many people do attend these churches and the membership base is good. You have not mentioned that racism prevails among the Whites we the White Adventist seek to poach new White members to join them, thus preventing them from joining the nearest Black SDA Congregation near them.
What I am hearing is that we should be preaching a social Gospel. Which type of social Gospel?

I have read the above comments and something is not right somewhere in this mix. Is it only with us as Seventh day Adventist that we are having these problems: re: poor church growth among the indigenous? Dan, how can you account for the White British Pentecostals who 'get in the Spirit' and have dynamic preachers who display all the trappings of full blown Penecostalism? By the way, I know because I was a Pentecostal member.

I posted the 6 comments below in response to the excellent article in the Messenger on how to relate to indigenous British people, which was in itself a response to Pr Sweeney's wake up call.

They will make most sense if you read them from part 1 upwards.

The jist of my comments is that the Adventist church in the UK will need to radically change the way it presents if it is ever to reach out effectively to its host country.
